Muslim Pun Tak Faham!!!

Inilah kenyataan politik nak tarik undi.

Karpal calls for lifting of gambling ban

GEORGE TOWN: DAP chairman Karpal Singh has called for the lifting of the gambling ban in Kelantan.

Stating that gambling for non-Muslims was a right provided underfederal laws, the veteran lawyer said Kelantan should be no exception.

“As long as it (gambling) is legal and it is in some instances, then it should be legal across the board in the country.

“Why should it (the law) be confined to certain areas and notKelantan? In this case, it is the federal laws that apply, not thestate laws,” Karpal told a press conference on Saturday.

He said gambling for non-Muslims was an individual’s prerogative.

PAS Youth, in Kelantan, had called for a nationwide ban on lotterysales and all forms of gambling with it chief Nasrudin Hassan sayingall state governments should emulate Kelantan in imposing a ban on theBig Sweep lottery as part of its no-gambling policy.

On Nasrudin’s callfor the ban to be extended first to the Pakatan Rakyat-led states ofPenang, Selangor and Kedah, then nationwide, Karpal merely said“Nasrudin is a small chief, get the big chiefs (to comment).”

On Segamut MP Lim Lip Eng’s statement that as a democratic nation,Malaysians should abide by the wishes of the majority and Muslims werethe majority in Kelantan, Karpal said Lim’s statement was a personalone and not reflective of DAP’s stand.

Chua ready to meet Nik Aziz

PETALING JAYA: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek is prepared to meet Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat over the ban on the sale of lottery tickets in the state.

MCA, he said, did not understand why the ban on the sale of Big Sweep lottery tickets in Kelantan was only enforced after PAS had ruled the state for more than 20 years.

The ban was an infringement of the fundamental rights of non-Muslims who were free to decide for themselves whether they wanted to gamble or not, he added.

“The PAS government should be reminded that the freedom of choice is enshrined in the Federal Constitution and they do not have the right of infringement.

“PAS will impose its values, irrespective of whether they infringe upon the fundamental and democratic rights of the rakyat of other beliefs and races,” Dr Chua said.

Dr Chua said what was happening in Kelantan was a preview of what would happen if the Opposition took over the Federal Government.

“I am willing to meet Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat to listen to what he has to say.

“I don’t understand the rationale of banning the lottery sale but I am ready to meet him so that he can explain the decision of the state,” he said.

The Kelantan PAS-led government had extended an olive branch to MCA to clear the air over its decision to ban the sale of the lottery tickets.

Senior executive councillor Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan had recently invited Dr Chua and central committee member Datuk Ti Lian Ker for a dialogue with him or Nik Aziz.

The PAS government received a barrage of criticism following the ban on the lottery sale recently.

Among the non-Muslim organisations in Kelantan that protested against the state government’s move was the Kelantan Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

Its president J.P. Goh had described the action of raiding two bookshops for selling Big Sweep lottery tickets and issuing the premise owners with summonses as infringing on the rights of non-Muslims.

National PAS Supporters Congress chairman Hu Pang Chow said the PAS government should concentrate on the state’s development and not indulge in petty issues like lottery sales.

Dr Chua had also said earlier that MCA would encourage Ti, a lawyer, to haul PAS to court for banning gambling in Kelantan.
