Handphone dealers offering smut to lure customers

SEBERANG PRAI (March 3, 2010): In the face of tougher competition, many unscrupulous handphone traders have resorted to throwing in free pornographic video clips to boost sales of their handphones.

And what's worse, some traders are selling such video clips to even teenagers and students to earn the extra buck.Expressing concern over the trend, The Secretariat Against Social Ills Penang (Urusetia Menangani Gejala Social Pulau Pinang or Unggas) today called for a crackdown on such unscrupulous traders.

"The selling of pornographic video clips to be downloaded into handphones has reached a worrying level and should be curbed as many youths who have handphones with video capabilities are doing this," said its director Mohd Hafiz Noordin.

He said this trend became widespread as more China-made handphones are imported and sold here at very low prices of between RM400 and RM450.

"As such handphones are already lowly priced, handphone dealers find it hard to further reduce prices to be competitive, so they offer 'special package's which include free pornographic video clips downloaded into the handphone memory cards" he said.

He claimed handphone dealers download such clips including local ones featuring Malaysians, from the internet to sell them to their customers.

"We have lodged a police report on Tuesday against shopping malls and handphone shops that sell and upload such smut into handphones of their customers," he said.

In calling on the authorities to take stern action, he said such readily available pornographic materials only serve to give rise to more social ills like rape, abandoned babies, promiscuity, incest and suicide.

"We urge the government to ban the use of handphones with camera and video capabilities, by those below the age of 18," he said.

Unggas urged the government to monitor and take action against handphone traders who sell such material and also track down the source of such smut and those involved in their propagation. -- theSun (4 Mac 2010)
